Australia is under pressure from the United Nations to end its controversial policy of detaining asylum seekers on the remote Pacific island of Nauru. There are 54 asylum seekers in the Australian-sponsored detention center on Nauru. Most are from Iraq and Afghanistan, and most have had their asylum applications in Australia rejected.
They refuse to return to their homelands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], insisting it is still too dangerous for them to do so. But they have also exhausted all legal avenues challenging Australia's refusal to grant them refugee status. They can't go forward, and they won't go back.
This week the Australian office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees voiced its concern for the detainees' mental well-being, especially the women and children.
The UNHCR called on the government in Canberra to find a compassionate solution to the problem. The organization has suggested that other countries be encouraged to accept the asylum seekers, who have now been on the tiny Pacific island,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], halfway between Australia and Hawaii, for three years.
The main opposition Labor Party backs the idea. Labor's immigration spokesman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lawrie Ferguson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says the UNHCR is on the right track. "We could have a pattern similar to the comprehensive plan in the Philippines for those Vietnamese people still in detention there, where countries around the world offer to take some of the people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "So even the UNHCR says one of the options might be for other countries to accept these people."
Under new border control measures introduced by Australia in 2001,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], known as the "Pacific solution,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," would-be migrants arriving by sea from Indonesia without prior permission were transported to camps in Papua New Guinea and Nauru while their asylum applications were considered.
The two states were paid an unspecified fee - the figure for Nauru is believed to be many millions of dollars - to house the refugees. While no time limit for detention was set, Canberra pledged to process the applications "swiftly and fairly."
Canberra insists the policy has been a success,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the number of illegal arrivals has fallen sharply since 2001. The facility in Papua New Guinea has now been closed.
Canberra says more than 700 refugees who spent time on Nauru have been resettled in Australia and elsewhere. Another 500 have returned home voluntarily.

Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) is another approach being developed that uses small catheters that are inserted into the cavity left by the lumpectomy procedure. There are several systems being used with different variations in equipment and technique. This is a form of brachytherapy, which uses radioactive seeds to deliver the radiation. A comparison view of a lake on Titan and Lake Superior
A U.S. spacecraft studying Saturn has found evidence of large seas on its biggest moon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Titan. But if they are seas, they would not be filled with water. Instead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as VOA's David McAlary reports, they would be liquid beds of the hydrocarbon methane, normally a flammable gas on the much warmer Earth.
The Cassini spacecraft,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which arrived to orbit Jupiter in 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has spotted several dark, sea-like features near Titan's north pole.
In January,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the orbiter's radar had viewed features the size of lakes on Saturn's moon, but Cassini scientist Stephen Wall of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California says the shapes just discovered are much larger.
"We have seen bodies of liquid that are big enough to be seas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "One of them in particular is the size of a small sea on the Earth."
Titan is the solar system's second largest moon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 50 percent larger than Earth's moon. The body Wall mentions stretches nearly 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],100 kilometers to about half way down Titan's northern hemisphere. This makes it only slightly smaller than the Caspian Sea.
There is no definite proof that this and the other apparent seas contain liquid, and additional fly-overs will be necessary for confirmation. But Wall says their dark appearance in radar indicates smoothness, and other properties point to the presence of liquids.
"We have now seen all of those things that you would typically associate with a body of water on the Earth - inlets and bays and channels and evidence of flow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], drainage basins - all of those things," he said. "We know that it cannot be water on Titan because it is too cold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we suspect that it is methane,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is right at the point where it can condense and evaporate."
Because methane is a major part of Titan's mostly nitrogen atmosphere, scientists have long believed that the moon has oceans filled with it . Titan is the only other body in the solar system known to have an active liquid cycle where the liquid evaporates from the surface and eventually recondenses as rainfall.
But the dense methane haze has hidden the view. Radar penetrates the haze and the earlier findings of probable lakes strengthened the belief in methane oceans. The new radar images add to the evidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
As a result, Cassini team members will be re-pointing the spacecraft's radar during a fly-over in May so it can pass directly over the dark areas seen from farther away.
