People queue to apply for jobs at Sewon America in LaGrange on Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. /AP
Those lucky enough to be employed in this era of downsizing will earn US$10 an hour. They will be directly put into production lines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], assembly lines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], press lines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and quality testing. The long lines show how dire the situation of those working in the nation's no.1 industry can be when it loses steam.
As American giants automakers GM and Chrysler shut their plants in Lousiana, Alabama,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Georgia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people rushed to LaGrange. Sewon America plans to hire another 400 people by 2012.
At 1 a.m. Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a long queue started to stretch over the stairs and even to the backyard lawn of West Georgia Technical College. The campus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in LaGrange, Georgia, was the venue for job applications to Sewon America,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a major supplier for the Kia Motors plant coming to West Point.
The queue already circled a parking lot when the doors opened at 8 a.m.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and application forms ran out in the morning. The process continues through Wednesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but more than 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 applications were registered on the first day for only 300 jobs.

Lee Myung-bak waves to supporters in Seoul Voting stations are now closed in South Korea's presidential vote,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and exit polls so far show no deviation from the result many have expected for weeks. Former Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak is projected to win about half of the popular vote, despite a last minute flare-up of corruption allegations against him.
Campaign officials at the headquarters of Lee Myung-bak's Grand National Party erupted into cheers Wednesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as national news networks predicted a landslide victory in the presidential election.
Exit polls sponsored by national news networks predicted Lee would receive more than 50 percent of the popular vote - a result election officials say they will be able to confirm before midnight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Lee's closest challenger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], United New Democrat Party candidate Chung Dong-young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is projected to receive about 26 percent of the popular vote. Independent candidate Lee Hoi-chang is expected to garner about 14 percent.
Lee Myung-bak, a former Seoul mayor and corporate chairman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has promised to cut taxes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], double per capita income,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and boost South Korea's growth rate from the current four percent to seven percent. He has also said he will take a more "businesslike" approach to doling out South Korean aid and investment to North Korea.
That economically focused message has proven extremely popular among South Koreans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who blame outgoing President Roh Moo-hyun for stalling the economy. Many voters say supporting Lee is all about improving their bottom line.
Ji Seung-yong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a taxi driver in his 40's, says he supported Lee because he saw "no other option" for reviving the economy.
Lee's double-digit poll leads have persevered through months of allegations he once engaged in fraud and stock manipulation. South Korean prosecutors cleared him last week of formal charges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but lawmakers approved an independent counsel investigation of the matter this week.
South Korean officials say turnout reached a record low in this election,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with only about 59 percent of the country's roughly 37 million eligible voters casting a ballot compared to about 70 percent five years ago.

The government and ruling party have decided to set aside a similar portion of the budget for aid to North Korea and inter-Korean economic cooperation as this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite North Koreas nuclear test in October.

In a meeting on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the government and Uri Party reduced the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund by a mere 3.5 percent from W1.22 trillion (US$1=W937) this year to W1.18 trillion next year. The government will pay W650 billion into the fund next year, the same amount it bore this year, reaffirming it will largely continue its engagement with Pyongyang.

As part of the Unification Ministrys budget,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund finances humanitarian aid and personnel and economic cooperation projects with the North.
In humanitarian aid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the government plans to send 500,000 tons of food and 350,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 tons of fertilizer to the North next year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the same as this year. It hugely increased financial support for the joint-Korean industrial complex in the North Korean city of Kaesong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more than doubling support to W212.5 billion -- W132.8 billion for building infrastructure in the industrial park and W18.2 billion for building dorms for North Koreans working there.

Next year's budget related to Mt. Kumgang is of similar size to this year's. The government plan includes money for a reunion center for separated families there, a project North Korea has suspended. Additionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some W80 billion is to be appropriated for helping North Korea reinvigorate its light industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and some W15 billion was set aside for a feasibility study for a power supply project to North Korea that would cost several trillion won predicated on the North giving up its nuclear program.
In reality,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not all the appropriated budget is likely to be spent on inter-Korean projects. This year some W480 billion was set aside for rice and fertilizer aid and support of North Koreas light industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but most of it was frozen after Pyongyangs missile and nuclear tests. A government official said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], We dont exactly know how much money will be spent on aid to North Korea and inter-Korean economic cooperation next year amid the North Korean nuclear crisis. But we need to secure a budget in advance on the premise that the inter-Korean relationship improves next year.

Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon
Israel continues to criticize Russia's invitation to Hamas leaders to visit Moscow in the wake of the militant group's victory in last month's Palestinian elections,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Israel's ambassador in Washington, Daniel Ayalon, says the international community must demand sweeping changes from Hamas, including a complete break from terrorism and full acceptance of Israel's right to exist. Appearing on CNN's Late Edition program, Ayalon said Russia is undermining what should be a unified message to Hamas.
"It is very puzzling, and, I would say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], troubling, because the Russians were part of the 'quartet,' which took a decision a week ago of no contact with Hamas unless they change," he said. "By breaching the unified position of the international community against a terror organization, they compromise our intention to bring about a change."
The quartet consists of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Russia. Russian officials have said they plan to emphasize the need for Hamas to reform itself in any meetings with the group's leadership.
Appearing on CBS's Face the Nation program, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice indicated the Bush administration is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding the Russian invitation to Hamas.
"The quartet has signed on to a statement that says a Palestinian government must recognize Israel's right to exist, must give up violence, must accept the two-state solution, and so on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "The Russians assure us that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after President Putin's comments, that anything they say to Hamas will simply be to reinforce that message."
Secretary Rice noted that Russia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unlike the United States and the European Union,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], does not regard Hamas as a terrorist organization.
Sitting next to the Israeli ambassador on Late Edition was the Palestinian representative to the United States, Afif Safieh, who predicted that the international community's concern over Hamas' leadership will prove unwarranted.
"I believe that Hamas is going to behave with great responsibility, surprising many,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Safieh. "I personally believe that Hamas will be reflecting Palestinian preferences for a convincing peace process,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was not the case for the last 15 years. They are aware that they do not have a mandate to go against the peace process which our people aspire for."
Hamas leaders have said they plan on traveling to Moscow later this month. Israeli officials have said that, as matters now stand, they have no intention of dealing with the incoming Palestinian government. Ambassador Ayalon said that if Hamas accepts Israel's right to exist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], renounces terrorism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], disarms, and actively fights against terrorism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then Israel would reconsider its position.

Chinas state-run Xinhua News Agency on Sunday came out in support of Korean sovereignty over the Dokdo Islets against Japan's territorial claim, saying Korea's right was 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],400 years older. When we look at history, Dokdo has been recorded as Korean territory since 512 A.D., while Japan began considering it Japanese territory from 1905,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Xinhua said in a story on the Dokdo row.
Entitled Whose territory is Dokdo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? the report was based on a story in the Shanghai Evening Post which said rich fishing grounds and deposits of oil and gas under the sea bed near the tiny uninhabited islets formed the background to Japans territorial ambitions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It offered a historical account of Koreas claims to the islets saying Lee Sa-bu, a general of the Shilla Kingdom under King Jijeung,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], conquered Usanguk -- the present-day Ulleung Island -- in 512, subjugating the Dokdo islets at the same time. During the reign of the Chosun Kingdoms King Seongjong between 1471 and 1481,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the islets were referred to as Usan Island and placed under the administration of Ulleung Island.
It said Japan admitted Dokdo was Korean territory in documents from 1667 and again in a Japanese Foreign Ministry document of 1896.
The paper reported that at the end of the Chosun period in 1900, King Gojong proclaimed Statute No. 41, in which Ulleung Island and Dokdo were placed under the administration of the kingdom's Samcheok county.
Meanwhile, the paper said Japan first learned of the islets in 1618,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when it called the islets Takeshima after a lost fisherman happened on them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and afterwards Japanese fishermen used it as a temporary anchorage.
But after clashes between Japanese and Korean fisherman in the seas near Dokdo in 1692 caused a diplomatic dispute between the two countries, Japan settled the conflict by barring its fishermen from the area. However, Japanese fishermen continued appearing off the islets.
The article said following the Meiji Restoration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Japan demanded that Korea open up Ulleung Island and the Dokdo Islets and unilaterally began asserting in 1905 that the islets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], under the name of Takeshima, were Japanese territory.
The paper said Japan was pursuing its claims to the islets based on flimsy historical evidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The paper said Japan had been continuously expanding its territorial seas even after its defeat in World War II,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], highhandedly incorporating the Dokdo and Diaoyu islands into its maps.

Chinese President Hu Jintao (r) shares a toast with French President Nicolas Sarkozy (l) after signing economic agreements during a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing China and France have signed multi-billion dollar nuclear and aviation deals as Nicolas Sarkozy makes his first visit to China as France's leader,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
On his first day in China Sunday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said business with China is vital for the French economy.
To emphasize that point French companies capitalized on China's huge demand for energy and transportation, signing contracts Monday worth some $30 billion.
The European aircraft maker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Airbus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will sell 110 A320 jets and 50 of the wide-body A330 aircrafts to Chinese airlines, while Areva will deliver two nuclear reactors to Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation.
But the trip is not all about business. Mr. Sarkozy said he pressed China on a number of issues - including helping ease the political deadlock in neighboring Burma,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], improving China's human rights record,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], letting the yuan appreciate, and cleaning up the environment.
Mr. Sarkozy says China has the power to play a major role in fighting climate change. He says France is not asking China to give up development,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but France would like Chinese development to be sustainable. The French president says his country is willing to help China reduce pollution.
China's rapid economic development has made the country among the world's top emitters of greenhouse gases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which many scientists think contribute to global warming.
China has been taking steps to improve the environment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including increasing its nuclear power generation to reduce reliance on coal-fired power plants.
Mr,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Sarkozy will fly to Shanghai Tuesday to meet with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao before leaving the same day for Paris,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Following Mr. Sarkozy's visit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the European Union and China will hold a summit Wednesday in Beijing to discuss trade issues. The EU and China are at odds over the safety of Chinese exports and the yuan exchange rate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which the EU considers too low and says contributes to Europe's huge trade deficit with Beijing.

Prosecutors are questioning Roh Gun-pyeong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the elder brother of former president Roh Moo-hyun, after having indicted Jeong Hwa-sam, a high school friend of the ex-president's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for receiving W3 billion (US$1=W1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],464) in the process of lobbying for Nonghyup, or the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation to take over Sejong Securities. As he was being investigated, Jeong reportedly said W2 billion out of the W3 billion in bribes were meant for the elder Roh. Prosecutors say they have circumstantial evidence showing that Roh Gun-pyeong owned a stake in a gambling parlor operated by Jeong and his brother and had been receiving dividends. Sources in the prosecution say an investigation of Roh is inevitable.
Former president Roh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a nationally televised address in March 2004, said his brother was just a simple old countryman -- at the time the simple man was involved in a scandal for allegedly being offered W30 million by former Daewoo Engineering & Construction president Nam Sang-kook,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who wanted to keep his job. At the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Roh said he wished educated men like the former Daewoo executive would leave his brother alone. After the televised address,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nam committed suicide by jumping off a bridge into the Han River,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the elder Roh got a two-year suspended sentence. Nam's family kept their mouths shut during Roh's term in office.
According to the investigation, the elder Roh then involved himself in the lobbying efforts over Sejong Securities in 2005. From his rustic hovel, he called the CEO of Nonghyup and introduced Jeong to him as someone who came from the "same neighborhood." That one phone call prompted the Nonghyup CEO to drop plans to acquire another brokerage on much better terms and pursue the acquisition of Sejong Securities. And that one phone call was also enough to get the agriculture minister at the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had been opposed to Nonghyup's acquisition of any brokerage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to stand down.
There have been several other accounts linking this simple countryman to the exercise of tremendous powers behind the scenes in the appointment of officials in government posts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially in top positions at state-run institutions. One dramatic example involves the president of a state-run company who sought the favor of the ruling party in the appointment of an official. When he learned that his request had been rejected, the executive happened to be driving along the Seoul-Busan expressway and immediately headed for Gimhae, the elder Roh's bucolic idyll.
No matter how hard the former president tries, power-hungry people in this country know exactly what some simple country folk can do for them. People who think about the future get worried about the potential backlash when the president's term ends. But simple men like the president's brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], surrounded by flatterers, are oblivious to the risks and imagine they are kings, only to face a tragic end. A common theme in these stories involving presidents' brothers is that they all think they are the exception.

Koreas conclusion of a free trade agreement with the U.S. on Monday drew mixed reactions from its big competitors in Asia, while the U.S. government and business circles welcomed the news. The Japanese press said Korea distinguished itself as a trade hub from China and Japan with the FTA, while Chinese experts predicted more Chinese investment in Korea.
 United States
In a letter notifying the U.S. Congress of the FTA, President George W. Bush said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "The U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement will generate export opportunities for US farmers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ranchers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], manufacturers and service suppliers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], promote economic growth and the creation of better paying jobs in the U.S." He pledged to cooperate with Congress, which is controlled by the Democrats, to see the trade deal ratified. American exporters also welcomed the news. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Coalition of Service Industries (CSI), the oldest business lobby groups in the U.S., urged Congress to ratify the FTA as soon as possible. The NAM said the FTA will further enhance U.S. competitiveness in Asia. The American Farm Bureau Federation also welcomed it, recalling that the share of American agricultural produce in the Korean market dropped to 30 percent in 2004, from 45 percent in 1996,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], due to China and Australia. The FTA offers an opportunity to rectify that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it added.
 China
Chinese trade experts believe that China may see its exports to the U.S. decline in the short term but foresee no inevitable disadvantages in the long term. Wang Yong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the director of the Peking University Center for International Political Economy Research, said, "With the conclusion of the South Korean-U.S. FTA, China may see exports of machinery to the U.S. or exports of agricultural produce to South Korea decline. But from the Chinese standpoint, this will offer Chinese enterprises an opportunity to make efforts to enhance their corporate competitiveness." Economist Su Dongpo said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "It seems the U.S. made many concessions to Korea in the negotiations in an effort to curb China's rapid growth by using South Korea." Chinese experts predict the deal will also spur Korea-China FTA talks, which are in their initial stage.
 Japan
Japans Nihon Keizai Shimbun said South Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which worries about being squeezed between Japan and China, is affirming its presence as a hub with the FTA. The newspaper said the FTA puts Japan at risk of lagging behind South Korea in the market for some products,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including cars and components. It criticized the Japanese government for failing to keep pace with the global trend of trade liberalization due to its tariffs on agriculture and fisheries products.
The Kyodo news agency said South Korea concluded the FTA with the U.S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. based on President Roh Moo-hyun's determination to get there before Japan and China. Jiji Press said that the bilateral FTA will likely make up for the politically shaky Korea-U.S,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. alliance in economic terms.

The U.S. is taking a cautious stance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Japan welcomes it and China is indifferent. These are the general reactions by news media in those countries in response to Grand National Party candidate Lee Myung-bak's election to the presidency.
The U.S. government has begun to analyze the impact an investigation by an independent counsel might have on Lee. Korea experts at the White House,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], National Security Council and State Department showed interest in how an independent counsel would be appointed and how the probe might proceed. The U.S. is reportedly worried about the extent of contact it should make with Lee should he be investigated.
The New York Times described Lee as Korea's first businessman to become president. The newspaper said Korea's political power has shifted to the conservative,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pro-business side. The Wall Street Journal reported that the fact that the election revolved around economic policies was a sign that Korea's democracy has matured.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary Nobutaka Machimura said in a press conference that he hoped Korea's new president would exercise the leadership necessary in enhancing bilateral relations. One official at the Japanese prime minister's office said the Japanese government had never been so nervous about the outcome of a Korean election. An official at Japan's foreign ministry welcomed Lee's victory,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying it created a basis to finally normalize bilateral relations.
Masao Okonogi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Korea expert at Keio University,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the result of the election was a public expression of anger toward the Roh Moo-hyun style of economics which favored the distribution of wealth but in reality widened the wealth gap.
The People's Daily of China forecast that the major policy goals of achieving peace and resolving tension on the Korean Peninsula would not change. Hong Kong's Ming Pao Daily News devoted an entire page to the Korean election,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reporting Wednesday that 10 years of anti-American and pro-North Korean policies would end.
Russian wire service RIA Novosti reported that Koreans valued Lee's experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which the candidate learned during his days at Hyundai Group.

Koreans in their teens and 20s are trying to make their lives more interesting with diverse and unusual Korean fonts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Hangeul is now used not just to define a corporate identity or give impact to book titles but also as a means to express individual character,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Fonts can convey a wealth of different expressions. Kwon Kyung-suk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], senior designer at Sandoll Communications,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], points out that a single Korean letter is a combination of consonant and vowel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bringing the total number of "characters" to 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],172,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thereby making a lot of diverse expression possible.
Park Yoon-jung,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], head of the design department at Yoon Design,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Hangeul is delicate in that the form varies depending on the addition or removal of the last consonant. Demand for good Korean fonts will increase."

President Roh Moo-hyun trod on some domestic and international toes on Monday in a speech at the opening ceremony of the 58th World Newspaper Congress in Seoul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Roh called for "institutional mechanisms that can hold in check the misuse of media authority including "democratic control structures", saying only if those were in place were newspapers qualified to supervise and criticize. He warned a press that was biased toward the values or interests of a particular controlling group should not be allowed to dominate the market.
President Roh Moo-hyun reaffirmed his hard-line attitude against the press through a congratulatory speech at the 58th World Newspaper Congress at the COEX in Seoul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Monday. Immediately after the presidents speech, Gavin O'Reilly, right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], acting president of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), delivered an opening speech critical of the current situation in Korea in terms of freedom of press. President Roh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, did not listen to OReillys speech as he had already left the conference area.
The president has been free with the term "media authority" when describing press organs critical of his government, while controlling groups similarly appeared to refer to those critical of him. But Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Man-soo calmed fears that more controversial changes to the Newspaper Law are in the pipeline, saying the president's comments were theoretical.
Roh did not stop at his conflicts with the domestic press, telling an audience that included leading press magnates including New York Times chairman Arthur O. Sulzberger, "Newspapers need to look back to see whether they did not cause tensions between nations by ceaselessly exaggerating suspicions about weapons of mass destruction." Observers say that this statement was aimed at how the U.S. media has been reporting on the North Korean nuclear issue.
Meanwhile, Gavin OReilly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], acting president of the World Association of Newspapers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], strongly criticized the Korean government's newspaper laws through his opening address.
"Recent legislative moves in the area of the media do strike us as being somewhat incompatible with internationally-recognized standards governing the freedom to publish. Bills passed by the National Assembly which aim, among other things, to set limits on the market share of newspapers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are not -- in our view -- a sensible way of dealing with what some may consider is excessive influence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], OReilly said.
He pointedly singled out controversial provisions in the countrys new newspaper laws. "Restricting a readers right to subscribe to the newspapers of their choice is unusual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to say the least,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and is not something that is prevalent anywhere else in the democratic world."
"As many in this room will attest, the road towards -- and evolution of -- freedom of expression and the free flow of information was a long and arduous one here in South Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said. Comparatively speaking, the closing stage of that long journey here in South Korea has only really come to bear in recent times - and yet it is still not flawless. We are aware that significant tensions exist between major newspapers and the State, with claims made regularly that there are plans to cut down their power by limiting their freedom.
OReilly said he hoped Koreans will take these candid remarks constructively, as indeed they are intended." He added, "As an organization which exists in the first instance to defend and promote freedom of the press worldwide,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we frankly never shy away from commenting on restrictions to press freedom."

Korean pop idol Rain has been tapped to sing the theme song of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Rain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is a star across much of Asia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will be the first Korean to sing an Olympic theme song since quartet Koreana sang "Hand in Hand" for the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He was apparently asked to sing the song last year and gladly accepted.

Working under a tight schedule as he promotes his new movie "Speed Racer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he is now discussing details of the song with the Chinese Olympic organization
The selection of a Korean star over Chinese singers is surprising,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Rain has an exceptional relationship with China. Since making his international debut there in 2004 he has worked as a spokesperson for companies like Pepsi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Pantec and Puma,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enjoying popularity as great as that of any Chinese star.
Performing at the Olympics is expected to further boost Rain's international stature,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as should his Hollywood debut in "Speed Racer," which is directed by the Wachowski brothers.
Rain also has plans to appear in another Hollywood movie this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. In sports he has been appointed as a PR ambassador for the 2011 Daegu World Athletics Championships,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Hamid Karzai ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf a brother, and said the two countries should work together to root out terrorism. In TV appearances Sunday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mr. Karzai addressed an ongoing dispute over which country is sheltering wanted al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden.
President Karzai said his country is taking a wait and see attitude about a truce recently signed between Pakistan and tribal leaders from regions along the border with Afghanistan.
At the same time, he told CNN's Late Edition violence in his country has increased.
"Our governor, a very prominent Afghan, was assassinated with a suicide bombing," said Hamid Karzai. "Other attacks took place in the area. So, we will have to really see, as we go ahead into future, if the agreement will hold, as it has been signed."
Afghanistan and Pakistan have traded barbs over which country is unwittingly providing sanctuary to wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden, who is believed to be hiding in the mountainous border region between the two countries.
The Afghan leader refrained from directly criticizing Pakistan. But in an exchange with host Tim Russert on NBC's Meet the Press, Mr. Karzai said if the world wants to eliminate terrorism, it has to address the roots of the problem.
KARZAI: "When I said we have to go to sources of terrorism, where they are trained, where they are equipped, where they are given money, where they are given motivation, and sent to kill international coalition forces, engineers, doctors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Afghans, that's what I meant."
RUSSERT: "You're talking about Pakistan."
KARZAI: "Wherever the source is."
The war against terrorism will be high on the agenda when President Bush receives Mr. Karzai at the White House Tuesday. The two leaders are scheduled to have dinner with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Meanwhile, another major issue in Afghanistan is a significant rise in the cultivation of opium poppies. Afghanistan supplies more than 90 percent of the world's opium and heroin poppy.
Mr. Karzai said he thought he could reduce the amount of poppies grown in the country when he was formally inaugurated two years ago. Now, he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], poppy cultivation has become an economic reality.
"More than 30 percent of the Afghan economy runs on this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," admitted Hamid Karzai. "The farmers live on it now. We are ashamed of it. It embarrasses us like hell, when I'm asked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the international community comes to speak to me about this."
Efforts to tackle this problem are getting a boost from the Clinton Global Initiative, run by former President Bill Clinton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has a plan to redirect Afghan farmers away from growing poppy. Mr. Clinton spoke on Meet the Press about a privately funded project aimed at encouraging Afghan farmers to switch crops.
"Our country, our government has spent quite a lot of money in Colombia, the Andean countries, not only helping to build up the security forces to fight the narco traffickers and their guerrilla supporters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also trying to help farmers in that region convert off of growing coca,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Bill Clinton. "And the economics have been quite challenging. So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we might find out some things in Afghanistan that might change that all over the world."
The $450,000 project, called the Global Partnership for Afghanistan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will launch 100 commercially-viable orchard and woodlot businesses in Afghanistan, with an eventual goal of giving Afghan farmers a higher rate of return than poppy cultivation.
